Waterproof jackets Buyer’s Guide
Enjoy walking in the great outdoors more with our expert guide to selecting the a great waterproof jacket
Choosing your waterproof jacket
A good waterproof jacket will allow you to experience the joy of walking, no matter the weather.
Here are our top tips when looking to buy a waterproof jacket:
Chose a fit and design that works for you
Make sure that you have enough room to move freely, the sleeves are long enough, and your lower back is covered even when you’re reaching forward or bending down.
Check that all zips, storm flaps, drawcords, press studs and pockets can be operated when you’re wearing gloves. Make sure you can access the pockets even when wearing a rucksack.
Consider the conditions
Consider the weather conditions of where you’ll be walking. For colder days, drawcords in the hood, waist and hem are great for keeping draughts at bay and trapping warm air. A good hood will protect you from driving wind, rain, and snow without restricting your vision. Fixed hoods (rather than detachable or roll away) usually offer better structure, shape and fit. In changeable weather, you don’t want to keep stopping to take layers on and off, so ventilation is essential, even with breathable jackets. Check for underarm zips, adjustable cuffs, and mesh pockets to allow airflow to circulate.
