Overview

A long weekend away in the stunning Lake District! We will have famous fells (hills/mountains), lakes, valleys, woodland, waterfalls and ancient monuments to explore and welcoming pubs and restaurants to relax in.

We’ll be based in Keswick, a bustling market town in the northern part of the National Park, close to the shores of Derwentwater and surrounded by classic Lakeland fells.

Given the long journey to the Lakes from Stag Walkers territory, this is an extended weekend to fit in at least three full days of walking. However, the weekend is completely flexible, so please feel free to join for whichever walks and meals you like.

We won’t be climbing the highest of the Lake District mountains or undertaking any very technical routes but much of the terrain in the Lakes is hilly/steep so a decent level of walking fitness will be required - it will be more tiring than our local walks. The planned walks may change depending on weather conditions and other considerations with the safety and comfort of the group in mind.

Thursday
Arrive in Keswick, meet for dinner in the evening and discuss the weekend ahead! Possible leisurely walk around town before dinner may be confirmed nearer the time.

Friday, Saturday and Sunday
Each day we will head out for a walk, either from Keswick on foot or using local buses. Options may include nearby fells such as Latrigg, Walla Crag or Cat Bells for views over Derwentwater; Castlerigg Stone Circle; lake shorelines; the Borrowdale or Buttermere valleys or perhaps further south near Grasmere and Ambleside.

Walk details will be confirmed nearer the time but are likely to be up to 10-15 miles and include plenty of uphill sections to secure great views! The initial plan is to have a ‘moderate’ walk on Friday, perhaps more ‘strenuous’ or longer on Saturday and then ‘moderate’ again on Sunday. The walk leader is planning to visit the area in mid-July to test out further walk options.

Monday
For anyone not leaving straight after breakfast, we’ll have a leisurely morning walk or other activity (crazy golf, boat trips etc. available, or even the Pencil Museum!) to ease out of the weekend, then grab lunch and head home.

Accommodation
Once you have booked onto this weekend away on Meetup, please make your own arrangements for accommodation. We recommend doing so ASAP as accommodation in the Lake District can become very expensive or fully booked. Keswick has a range of B&Bs, apartments, hostels and campsites. For those driving, it may also be possible to stay outside the town and park in Keswick each day.

Meals
We will meet up for meals on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings and possibly Monday lunchtime (further details will be provided nearer the time of the trip).

Booking
The weekend is exclusive to current (paid-up) members of Ramblers. Space is limited to 16 people and must be booked via Meetup.
Book your place by clicking the ‘Attend’ button and if the event is full, click ‘join waitlist’ and you will be added if a place becomes available.
Please book only if confident you can attend and remember to update your RSVP if you have to cancel.

Travel
Keswick can be reached by public transport in two main ways:

  1. Train from London to Penrith then bus X5 to Keswick.
  2. Train from London to Oxenholme or Lancaster, then train to Windermere and then bus to Keswick.

Driving will likely take 5-6+ hours from Hertfordshire. We encourage car sharing - to offer a lift or ask for one from a fellow walker, please use the Meetup event page.

Any questions?
If you've not been to a Stag Walkers weekend away before, they are a great chance to explore somewhere new and to spend some time socialising with other members of the group.
If you have any questions about the weekend, please post on the Meetup event page.
