Overview

Peterlee

An easy 4½ miles (7 km).

The walk follows the boundary between South West Peterlee and Blunts Dene, which is a tributary of Castle Eden Dene. We then drop into the Castle Eden Dene for a short while to visit the Devil’s Lapstone, The Kissing Frogs, The Garden of Eden Bridge, and The Newt Pond.

We’ll also go to have a look at Victor Pasmore’s controversial architectural sculpture ‘The Apollo Pavilion’. Nice or Nasty… you decide !!!

Refreshments will be at the East Durham Garden Centre, SR8 3BZ, on the A182 towards Easington. Watch the potholes as you enter the car park.

Peterlee Leisure Centre / Library. From Chester-Le-Street make your way to the A19 Southbound. Take the Peterlee exit B1320 (Left at the end of the slip road). Follow this road downhill past the college, for half a mile. At the roundabout take the first exit (Signposted ‘Town Centre’). After 400 yards turn right at the first traffic lights just before a big square office block. Follow this road, which bends right, and where the road then bends left in front of a church, turn right into the Leisure Centre / Library car park. We have permission to use the car park for up to 4 hours, but please try to keep the number of cars down to a minimum as the car park is quite small. Please carshare if possible. Nearest Postcode : SR8 1AF.
