There is a slightly shorter option.
The walk leaves the Dundas Arms, overlooking the canal, and follows the towpath to Marsh Benham Lock, passing Dreweat’s Lock and Copse Lock. The River Kennet flows along beside the canal path to the left, sometimes obscured by trees and bushes, and there are open fields and woods on the opposite side of the canal. When we reach Hamstead Lock at Marsh Benham, there is the opportunity to stop there for the break (which makes a total of 4.75 miles with the return), where there is a bench overlooking the canal and lock. The longer walk returns to this point, before returning to the pub.
During the walk, we:
- pass the site of Hamstead Marshall Castle
- walk along the “blue” section of the wartime GHQ line
The Dundas Arms has asked to have our menu choices by Friday the week before so please contact the walk leader using the email link as soon as possible.
Advance booking for this walk is essential.
