We start from the Elan Valley Visitor Centre (plenty of parking, loos, cafe), cross the narrow road bridge and ascend gently towards Craig Cnwch. Then it's down to walk close to the water and up quite steeply by Nant y Gro, the site where 'The Dambusters' tested, to our coffee stop. There's a number of streams to cross on the next section, which may be challenging if it's been raining heavily. We carry on above woodland with glorious views where trees have been felled, dropping down steadily to meet the road and cross a bridge. We return leaving the road to climb steadily on a delightful path where we'll have lunch, then it's through more woodland to drop down steeply, with care as it's slippery, to meet a road and explore a church that's been built since the area was flooded to cater for Birmingham's water needs. Crossing another road bridge we return on a path between the road and the reservoir. Highly recommended.
I've booked to walk this in April as the Visitor Centre is open from 9 to 5 then, 10 to 4 in the winter which would be no use to us. It's £3.00 to park but I expect us to be back by 4 so tea and cake will be an option.
