This straightforward, picturesque walk is basically a long stretch of golden beach sandwiched between two busy coastal towns. The walk starts from Irvine Harbour, along the sandy Irvine Bay, onto Barassie Shore and finishing at Troon.
After alighting from the train, we head down towards the harbour passing several cafes, an art centre and the Scottish Maritime Museum. Irvine was a major seaport until Port Glasgow was constructed in the 17th century. Heading to the beach we pass the remains of the Bridge of Scottish Invention part of an abandoned millennium project, once providing a pedestrian access across the river to The Big Idea museum which closed in 2003.
We then follow the beach along the dunes and gently climb up to The Stone Dragon, at Irvine Beach Park for stunning views of The Firth of Clyde and islands (depending on weather conditions). The Stone Dragon is locally known as The Great Protector of Irvine. After descending back down to the beach we continue our stroll along the sands, onto Barassie Shore and into Troon.
This is a moderate walk with very little ascent. There may be some wide channels of water to cross on the beach so waterproof footwear is advisable. If you wish to come on the walk you must contact the leader in advance by email, text or phone call, but not more than two weeks in advance. Also, please provide the leader with a mobile number in case arrangements change. Trains from Troon back to Glasgow Central run on a half hourly basis, at 16 mins and 46 mins past the hour.
Please do not come on the walk if you are experiencing any of the symptoms of COVID.
