The tradition of beating the bounds dates back at least 600 years, when maps were scarce. Parishioners and local church dignitaries walked the boundaries, beating landmarks with willow wands to mark their territory. This walk - roughly half of Shoreham's bounds - comes courtesy of The Shoreham Society, who put the walk on about 10 years ago. The parish turned out en masse, and an enjoyable day was had by all, especially with tea, cakes and badges provided at the end.
Hills, and plenty of them, both sides of Shoreham.
Please bring a picnic lunch. Opportunity for after-lunch coffee (toilets also available) at Lullingstone Visitor Centre.
Assistance dogs welcome; willow wands optional.
Refreshments in Shoreham after the walk.
