This walk takes you from Brandon Station in Suffolk through the beautiful countryside along the Little Ouse River, ending in Thetford.
Starting at Brandon Station we'll join the path that runs alongside the Little Ouse River. The riverbanks are lined with reeds and wildflowers, creating a serene and picturesque setting. The path is mostly flat, making for an easy and enjoyable walk.
The walk continues through a mix of woodland and open fields, with the gentle sound of the river always nearby in an area rich in wildlife. Our first stop will be at the pretty village of Santon Downham. We will then pass the earthworks of a medieval to post medieval moated manor and associated complex, part of Santon deserted medieval village.
As we near Thetford, we'll enter Thetford Forest Park, one of the largest lowland pine forests in Britain. The forest is crisscrossed with trails, but we'll continue to follow the path that parallels the river, enjoying the mix of coniferous and deciduous trees.
Emerging from the forest, we'll arrive at the outskirts of Thetford. The town is steeped in history, with its origins dating back to the Saxon period. As you approach the town center, you'll see the remains of Thetford Priory, a significant medieval monastery. The walk ends as we reach Thetford Station, where you can explore the town further or catch a train back to Cambridge.
