Distance - 12 miles
The walk, based on GM Ringway stage 8, will start at Broadbottom station after the arrival of the 10.03 from Manchester Piccadilly due at 10.25.
The GM Ringway website gives the following highlights for this stage:
– Two lovely old lanes, with panoramic views across the Etherow and Longdendale valleys
– An ancient-seeming track that climbs into the Peak District National Park via an old stone bridge
– A brief trackless section through the appropriately named ‘Wilderness’ – the highest point of the entire GM Ringway trail
– Breathtaking views over Saddleworth’s Chew Valley
– A leisurely finish via Chew Piece Plantation, the only remaining area of older mixed woodland close to Dovestone Reservoir.
This is a challenging walk that requires a fair degree of fitness and persistence with some terrain certain to be boggy.
Note: walkers are advised to check one of the rail websites such as nationalrail or trainline close to the departure time in case of late changes to the running of the train.
Train ticket - both stations are within the Greater Manchester boundary so the best ticket will depend on concessions &/ other journeys made on the day.
Car use not advised as the stations are on different lines.
Walk route - Hague Road, Carr House, Coach Road, Hall Farm, The Wilderness, Chew Reservoir, Oldham Way, Greenfield
Expected time into Greenfield - no later than 5.00pm
Walking boots and clothing (including waterproofs if wet weather is possible) are essential. Lunch and non-alcoholic drinks should be brought.
