Overview

A walk along old railway paths and through farmland in the lower Deerness Valley. We walk along the Brandon - Bishop Auckland Railway Path to Scripton Gill and then up to Brandon Village. There are several stiles on the route from Brandon Village via Bolton Farm down to the River Deerness, and this section may be muddy in parts, with some uneven stretches. Walking poles advised. From the Deerness Valley Railway Path, we walk up towards the village of Broompark and then northwards to Aldin Grange Fishing Lake and then southwards again along the Lanchester Valley Railway Path via Baxter Wood to the Broompark Picnic Area.  Those wishing to do a shorter walk may simply walk back to the picnic area along the railway path, missing out the section to Aldin Grange and Baxter Wood.
