This is a lovely route around Chaterlherault Country Park, following the Riccarton Path and the Green Bridge Path and visiting the ruins of Cadzow Castle on the way. The trail starts from the car park by the Chatelherault Visitor Centre by Chatelherault House, an 18th-century hunting lodge that was built for the Duke of Hamilton. We will make our way onto the Riccarton Path, which traces the perimeter of the woodland and the Hamilton Golf Club. Eventually, we'll take the steps down to the Avon Water, where we cross the Green Bridge and join the Green Bridge Path on the opposite bank. This leads us through more woodland, crossing several small streams and cascades. We’ll also pass the ruins of Cadzow Castle just before reaching the Duke’s Bridge. Cadzow Castle is a medieval stronghold built in the 15th and 16th century. Only ruins remain within the woodland. After admiring the site, we cross the bridge over the Avon Water to return to the car park. This is a peaceful route, offering beautiful woodland and riverside scenery and following undulating paths that are well-signed. Some of the paths can get muddy at times, so come prepared with the appropriate footwear. Make sure to keep an eye out for deer and birdlife on the way.
