A walk along the historic Welsh/ English borderline, largely unchanged since the time of King Offa, though there's been a few battles & buildings since! We enter the grounds of the impressive medieval Chick Castle, via the longest canal tunnel in Wales, past beautiful ornamental Queen Anne gates and along permissive paths in deer parks and woods. Then we follow Offa's Dyke National Trail to the site of the Battle of Crogen at an old river crossing bridge, (the Welsh won) and a steep climb up to a well preserved section of the C8th Dyke for a picnic lunch stop with wonderful views. Returning through the pretty Pentre Woods in the beautiful Ceiriog Valley, we cross a spectacular viaduct, with a canal towpath aqueduct to finish, ending at a community run tea shop with excellent cakes (optional).
This walk includes a 400m walk though a canal tunnel, so please bring a torch. There are toilets and a chance to refill water bottles at Chirk Castle during a late morning snack stop. Before lunch is a long downhill stretch followed by a steep 20 minute climb to the lunch stop. Please bring a snack, packed lunch and drink. There are several stiles and a railway crossing. There is a small public car park in front of Caffi Wylfa and limited street parking at a layby around the corner in station road, car sharing is strongly advised from the rear of Meole Brace park and ride car park. Please book with leader via email, text or WhatsApp.
