Hello Everyone
New heights for us this Sunday!
We’re off to Shropshire’s highest point, the summit of Brown Clee Hill at 1770 feet (540 mtr), starting from Cleobury North some eight miles south-west of Bridgnorth. This is a walk I’ve had my mind on for some time and the recon a few days ago exceeded expectations.
Starting with a gradual climb we gain height followed by a flat section on a very pleasant lane through established parkland with open views to the east. We then head upwards once more to reach open ground towards the summit with its telecoms and air traffic control structures. Sensational 360 degree views from here on the right day. The descent also features a flat stretch to break things up, this time alongside extensive beech woods resplendent in their springtime green. The route then passes through pine forests and meadows to return us to base. Good paths and tracks in the main but a few yards of bog hopping towards the top. Five stiles.
Whilst the gradients on this Moderate to Strenuously graded walk are prolonged they’re not steep. We'll take our time in any case, as we always do.
Registration: 09.45. Walk start: 10.00. Walk leader: Barry (Landline 01543 684254). Sorry, my mobile is unavailable at present.
You’re welcome to join us of course. Let us know beforehand if you’re new to the group, cheers.
Many thanks to Cleobury North Village Hall for the use of their car park and facilities. We'd like to make a donation to them of £1 per person thank you. (No loose change please!)
There is also a well stocked shop on site which will be open from 09.00 to 13.00.
Post walk refreshments at The Pheasant in Neenton, a community run country pub given a new lease of life in recent years.
Directions: The start is located 8 miles southwest of Bridgnorth, Shropshire.
Initially from your home location to Bridgnorth via the A5 or M54 to M54 Junction 4. From here take the A464, then the A442, signed for Bridgnorth throughout. This route brings you into Bridgnorth where you basically pass through without touching the town centre.
At the first island go straight over, direction Kidderminster, A442, Esso station on your left just after the island. Continue for 0.5 mile then turn right at the next island onto the A458, direction Shrewsbury. Cross the river bridge and proceed uphill for 1.0 mile to then turn left at the island onto the B4364, direction Ludlow. ⚠️Signage here was partially obscured by foliage last week.
Follow the course of the winding B4364 for 5.5 miles to reach Neenton where keep going, still B4364, for 1.3 miles to enter the hamlet of Cleobury North. Pass the church set back on your left then 180 yards later bear slightly left off the main road into the village hall car park (photo above). ⚠️Please avoid parking near the shop and post office entrance used by local folk, and also the double gates to the sports field. Thank you.
Alternatively via the A454 from Wolverhampton where upon approaching Bridgnorth proceed at the island onto the B4363 down Hermitage Hill to the next island where turn left to pick up the route above passing the Esso station etc.
