The area round Cockayne Hatley is of interest, as before the Second World War it was home to the largest orchard in Europe, with in excess of a million trees.  Unfortunately it only produced Coxes Orange Pippin apples and after the War as demand fell it became increasingly uneconomic to operate.  Production on a reduced scale continued until the late 1960s, but finally in 1974 the remaining trees were removed and burnt and fields reverted to normal arable use.
