Overview

Hello Everyone

We return to the Matlock area of the Peak District this Sunday with scenic a walk taking in three of the local villages starting in Cromford and working our way anticlockwise via Bonsall and Middleton, before a stretch along the High Peak Trail and Cromford Canal on our journey back to base.

Why not join us? You're very welcome to do so! It'd be great if you could let us know if this will be your very first walk with Chase & District group. We can then also keep our 👀's open for you in the extensive car park at our start point where it's not unusual to find other walking groups gathering at this time of day.

Registration: 09.45. Walk start: 10.00.  Walk Leader: Barry (07811 141484)

Hilly terrain for the first half warranting the Strenuous tag but leveling out considerably in the second half which is rated Leisurely. The majority of this walk is on green lanes, surfaced trails (the High Peak Trail has loose fine chippings for example), and some roadside footpaths, particularly so in the villages. Toilets are available at the start, at coffee break, and also later on during the walk. Just a handful of stiles.

☕🍰😋Saint James's Church in Bonsall can offer light refreshments at reasonable prices during our first stop should you wish to indulge. Edit Friday 20th: Given the wet forecast this inside option looks very favourable. We also have a lunch stop with benches under cover later on.

Meanwhile, post walk refreshments to be sorted out on the day, possibly in Cromford before we return to the cars. We'll see how it goes. Much depends on the weather.

See you all there on Sunday!

Via Derby: (⚠️noting that the northbound slip onto the A38 at Streethay, Lichfield, is scheduled as closed until 30th September). Take the A38 northbound to Markeaton Island, Derby, following the signage for Matlock and the A6. After this island continue on the A38 for 1.75 miles take the exit slip onto the A6, direction Matlock, and proceed for 14 miles via Belper to enter Cromford where turn right at the traffic lights into Mill Road, direction Lea, Holloway, & Critch. Continue for 600 yards past Cromford Mill and turn right into the last car park as per the photos above. ⚠️Take care as the entrance is unsighted until you are virtually upon it.

Via Ashbourne: In Ashbourne town centre, A515 St John Street (with all the bunting), go straight on where we usually bear left up the hill. At the T-junction turn left onto Cokayne Avenue for 600 yards until the T-junction with the B5065 where turn right, direction Wirksworth and Carsington Water. Continue for 8.5 miles until the crossroads with traffic lights near Wirksworth.

Straight on here, still B5035. After 0.75 mile turn left at the T-junction onto the B5036, and descend for 1 mile into Cromford and the lights at the A6 junction where get into the right hand lane for Derby, then once on the A6 turn immediately left into Mill Road, direction Lea, Holloway, & Critch, then as above.
