A fast-paced walk of two halves; starting from Otford, the first half follows the North Downs Ridge, and then leaves the ridge and passes through pleasant open fields and woodland (as well as a small collection of ancient rocks that apparently date back to 3985 - 3855 BC), before finishing at the historic town of West Malling. There are some reasonably challenging climbs in the first half of the walk, making up the vast majority of the total ascent of 700 metres.
The lunch stop is slightly before the halfway point at around 9 miles distance at Trosley Country Park where there is a cafe and toilets. A good selection of pubs and restaurants in West Malling High Street at the end of the walk. It is a further half a mile to the railyway station (included in total distance) from the High Street. The walk may be muddy in places, especially if it rains immediately before or during the walk.
Please bring a packed lunch. Bring a headtorch as well if you have one, just in case we lose the light at the very end.
Transport: Take the 9:34 from London Charing Cross (Waterloo East 9:37, London Bridge 9:43) arrive at Otford at 10:10.
