The walk begins with a stiff climb onto Upton Cow Down. A pause to catch breath at the top brings decent views of this corner of Salisbury Plain, before heading through nearby woodland where the beech trees are carved with graffiti reflecting decades of love lost but mainly love gained. Beyond lies Chalford, followed by a potentially slippery descent into Old Dilton located in its secretive valley. The hamlet’s 14th century St Mary’s Church with its box pews and unusual spire will catch the eye, although a detour is necessary to access the church key. It is then cross country on a bridleway back to the old A350; my planned return on a footpath via Biss Bottom was thwarted by mud. Bring snack.
If you would like a longer walk, branching off from Nigel's walk, then Frank will lead on to make a a 10 mile total walk, by circumnavigating the Warminster golf club, with a couple of extra hills Please let both Nigel (07944 351 151) and Frank (07814 156 664) know if you want this longer option.
