THIS WALK IS CANCELLED The leader has back injury and unable to lead.
There are very few walks that can be done adjacent to and on our estuaries. This walk takes in the Kingsbridge and Salcombe estuary, a designated nature reserve. Starting from West Charleton village hall we walk Charleton Marsh, an SSSI rich in wild life, at the end of which we cross a style directly onto the foreshore of the estuary. Walking poles are recommended for this part of the walk.
We follow the foreshore towards Wareham Point opposite the Salt Stone, then around the point following Frogmore Creek until Geese Quarry (unused). Here we pick up the footpath and continue adjacent to the creek to Frogmore village where we will stop for lunch. We return via the old turnpike road (unmetalled road) which was the original road to and from Kingsbridge before New Bridge was built across Bowcombe Lake in 18th/19thC. After an accent of 300ft this lane offers far reaching views over the estuary and countryside.
The foreshore is loose stones and slippery in places therefore walking poles are recommended.
Given the sensitivity of the nature reserve and SSSI we ask that only assistance dogs are brought.
Parking is by kind permission of the village hall but a donation of £1/car would be appreciated.
