The walk will look at some local buildings of interest in the market town, the great benefactor of the town Sydney Simmons and the legend of Benjamin Gayer. We visit Simmons Park, passing Swiss Cottage, ‘Pig Bridge’, Ball Hill before reaching Fatherford. The return route will include a horse drawn tramway which operated between 1870’s – 1930’s, transporting slate and stone from quarries at Fatherford and Halstock. We will pass below the station and walk through a section of the Castle deer park, from which we will get glimpses of the castle, before returning to the museum.
Walk in association with Dartmoor Preservation Association.
