Overview

This walk will be led by Anne Buchan.  If you'd like to join us, please contact Anne on mobile 07586664345; or email annebuchan3@gmail.com

Overview: We will visit old paths around Glengarnock.

The walk will begin from Glengarnock railway station at 10 am. Transport can either be by train, bus or car with car parking at Glengarnock station car park (more spaces on the ‘Beith’ side, signposted Kersland Road).

The walk will commence from Glengarnock Station (Beith side), walking only a few yards before going up ‘Johnnie Boyd’s brae’ at 15 minute walk through an overgrown, little used byway. This path is uphill and requires the Ramblers to walk single file, taking care as there will be mud (in one part only), bramble/hawthorn, stepping over fallen trees and over a small fence at the end.  There is a pavement/road alternative should any walker wish to skip ‘Johnnie Boyd’s Brae’. We will emerge near the top of the hill at Auchengree, where we then explore paths which run over two fields i.e. a ‘dog walker’s loop’ prior to stopping at Auchengree Farm Shop for the coffee stop. NB limited outdoor seating.

Following the coffee break we take a walk along a country road to the Den (small hamlet), crossing with care, the busy A737 road at the ‘crossroads’ and going up the little used path to the High Den. We take a short detour via a farm/ field to Barkip (hamlet) where we enter some woodlands (pictured) from which we emerge and cross the A737 again to enter the Maulside (Mansion House Estate). We then walk the farm track at the Maulside, from which we will detour to take in Tianna Falls (waterfall, pictured) where you can also see the ruins of a mill and an old bridge. Crossing the old bridge, we go up the banking at the other side coming out near the Longbar, where we will cross the road and take the path running behind the new houses/Longbar and return to Glengarnock Station.
