A relatively short but strenuous circular of all the uplands between Glynde and Lewes. Starting from Glynde Village car park we climb Mt Caburn with a short optional detour to see the Iron Age hill fort. We contour round above Caburn Bottom and drop down steeply for a coffee stop just past the dew pond at Oxteddle Bottom. Next come the ascent to the cliffs above Lewes with their spectacular views of the town and the River Ouse. Then we circumnavigate the edge of Malling Down nature reserve along some very muddy paths, eventually dropping down to a lunch stop amidst the disused pits under Malling Hill.. We then have a short but very steep earth bank (almost a scramble!) up onto Cliffe Hill. Finally we arrive on Saxon Down and head back to Glynde.
There are steep slippery ascents and descents on this walk. It is also constantly up and down, though the views are fabulous. Poles are strongly recommended.
It is possible to shorten this walk by a mile and a half for anyone who would like to do a partially self guided version. The shorter walk also avoids the steep earth bank. The leader will give route info on the day.
