Overview

A lovely walk never far from water. We follow various arms of the Grand Union Canal and nearby reservoirs. From Wilstone we gain the tow path and pass a plethora of locks and bridges on the Aylesbury Arm. Parts of the canal here have little water in them as leaks are a problem. We then meet up with The Grand Union proper just before Marsworth and will stop for a snack break here to admire the birdlife. Crossing the Marsworth reservoir we skirt Tringford reservoir and then join the Grand union again on the Wendover arm, initially dry but restored further up. We will stop for lunch over the bridge in an area with some well placed benches. We drop down around Wilstone reservoir, and then across some fields to rejoin the Aylesbury arm for the final stretch. I saw the flash of blue of a kingfisher on my recce along this very quiet part. Back in Wilstone after the walk, we can either pop into the Half Moon PH or drive back to Mead Farm shop and café for refreshments just a few minutes down the road.

The way is mainly flat and no stiles. The final field may be boggy at the exit and the towpaths may be muddy after rain.

Bring a packed lunch.

Well behaved dogs are allowed.

Wilstone Village. Tring Road. There is plenty of parking mostly as soon as the houses start on the right hand side and a bit further up the road, if coming from Buckland. Once past the Village Hall it is trickier. Walk to meet at The Half Moon PH in the center of the village.
