The Green Chain Walking Festival takes place from Sunday 1st to Sunday 15th September 2024. It will include around 12 London Ramblers’ free guided walks of varying lengths, taking in different aspects of the Green Chain Walk. The walks will all be open to the public. The 52-mile Green Chain Walk is a branching network of 15 existing sections (plus one proposed) offering many opportunities for circular and linear walks in the over 300 open spaces and woodlands of southeast London. The festival aims to promote the Green Chain Walk and its many attractions to those living locally, and in London more generally, whether already walkers or not.
Join me as I lead a walk from Eltham to Greenwich along the missing section 12 of the Green Chain Walk. This section was planned in detail in 1976 and due to open with the other 15 sections of the Green Chain walk. However, for various reasons, the signposts and waymarks were not installed and as result the section has never officially opened. It is urban at the start and much passes through a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
I'll be going for a post walk drink, probably in the Plume of Feathers, established in 1691, and all who fancy it are welcome to join me.
