Moderate 11 mile walk with no steep ascents or descents.
Route: linear to St. Albans City Station, through parks, common land, the newly established Heartwood forest with countryside views, the pretty Childwickbury country estate, with views also out to another estate, Gorehambury and the historic city of St Albans.
Lunch Stop: Sandridge village, where there are three public houses, a tearoom and a churchyard with a few benches for picnic lunches. Please bring food with you, as there may not be time for a pub lunch.
Drop-out points: There are infrequent buses from Sandridge to St Albans or Harpenden, including the 357 to St Albans at 13.06 and the 304 to St Albans at 14.56.
Meet at Harpenden Station at 10.06
Travel: take the Thameslink train (Bedford service) which can be joined at any of the following stations: East Croydon 09.03/London Bridge 09.19/Blackfriars 09.26/Farringdon 09.31/St Pancras Intl (platform B) 09.35/West Hampstead Thameslink 09.43 - arr Harpenden 10.06. (Note: If joining at St Pancras Intl, please ensure you use Platform B at 09.35 (Bedford service) - do not take the slow train which leaves from a numbered East Midlands platform at the same time!) Check trains the day before.
Ticket/Fare: Buy Off-Peak Day Return to Harpenden. FP holders buy from Elstree/Borehamwood.
Finish: St Albans City Station at about 4pm.
