We are the Scarborough and District Ramblers. We open the way for everyone in our local community to enjoy the pleasures of walking.
The walk starts from Moorgate, about 2 miles north of Hawnby- follow the minor road to the east of Hawnby Hill Crag. There is adequate parking space for cars at the start point. We head into a remote part of the Cleveland Hills, passing grouse butts before descending between two woods to Malkin Bower. There is then a reasonably flat section for some 3 miles before we ascend to the east side of Easterside Hill and eventually approach Hawnby village from the south. We then ascend and descend Hawnby Hill ( lower path for those people who have had enough of climbing) and reach our start point. Throughout , good views of the hills in the area and a sense of remoteness and wildness .
At the time of the recce, the road to Hawnby from the B1257 coming north from Helmsley was closed at SE572870.If it is still closed on the day of the walk , suggest you drive about 4 miles further north on B1257 and turn left on to minor road at Laskill Farm. This road to Hawnby is rather narrow and up and down but it is only about 3 miles to Hawnby. When you get to the outskirts of Hawnby, take the road to the right( signposted Osmotherley)
Follow B1257 north west from Helmsley, passing turn off to Rievaulx. See above for turnoff to Hawnby.The starting point is two miles north of Hawnby, from outskirts of Hawnby take minor road to east of Hawnby Hill Crag. Go past the entrance to Nova Scotia farm and after about 300 metres past the farm, you will come to Moorgate, which is a confluence of tracks and the road where there is a car park
