Overview

An all-day walk through undulating farmland, parkland and woodland.

We begin by heading downhill into the Mimram Valley. Walking southeast we pass arable fields and through Tewin Bury Farm before crossing the chalk stream River Mimram. After a short stretch on a wide roadside verge we ascend past the former Panshanger Airfield then enter Panshanger Park, the centrepiece of our walk.

The Panshanger Estate was owned by the Earls Cowper until the early 20th century and shaped by the famous landscape gardeners Humphry Repton and Lancelot 'Capability' Brown. Owned by Tarmac since the 1980s and quarried for sand and gravel, parts of the site have been restored for farming and wildlife with the country park opening to the public in 2014.

Within the park, our route heads through woodland over Brocket Hill and passes two historic points of interest, the Great Oak (said to be around 450 years old) and the 19th-century Orangery (the only building that remains of Panshanger House). We’ll have our packed lunch stop overlooking the river and the landscaped lakes.

On leaving the park we’ll turn northwest through farmland, passing the impressive Marden Hill country house and through Tewin churchyard. If time permits we’ll pop into Tewin for a quick drink at one of the village pubs before progressing through Dawley Wood and back towards Digswell, where we’ll have a great view of the Digswell Viaduct before arriving back at our start point.

After the walk, we can enjoy cream teas at Digswell Village Hall.

Please bring a packed lunch, snacks and drinks.

Dogs are welcome on a lead.
