If you fancy a long walk then join us on this undulating loop through classic rural Hertfordshire: flinty fields under upland skies, ridge-perching farms, fine oak woodland, unusual water towers, attractive villages and grand 18th century parkland estates built with the spoils of empire.
We'll start off southeast through the Woodhall Estate, with fine views across its House and the magnificent Broadwater, before heading up through pasture and woodland on the way to Chapmore End and its tranquil village pond. Across rolling fields we'll first spot Tonwell's iconic 1960s Grade II listed water tower and pass it up close on the way to Sacombe's parkland and the second country mansion of the day. The serenity of St Catherine's Church will also offer the chance of a comfort break with a toilet available.
After crossing the line of a Roman road, pace and weather dependent we'll enjoy our packed lunches on a field edge of Smart's Hill, offering great views over the surrounding countryside and the fringes of Dane End, where we'll stop in for refreshments at The Boot pub. Suitably watered, we'll push on towards Benington via wooded holloways and much open farmland, eventually entering the delightful village via Duck Lane.
We'll pass the gates of Benington Lordship, our final country pile, best known for its formal gardens, castle ruins, displays of snowdrops and chilli festival! Leaving the village, we'll be striding southward towards Watton-at-Stone on tracks, quiet country roads and fields, with some final sweeping views before we pass through the Jubilee Community Wood and return to our start point for some well earned refreshments!
Please bring a packed lunch and drinks.
Dogs are welcome on a lead.
