Overview

A walk of nine miles showcasing the best of Mid Herts countryside, through villages, woods and rolling fields.

We begin by walking from Digswell towards Welwyn village and onto Danesbury Park. Formerly the park of Danesbury House, this is now a nature reserve, with a mixture of grassland and mature trees, home to bats, owls, fungi and insects. Rare breed cattle graze here at times. But our real reason for the visit is to search for the Grotto; a mid-Victorian garden glade, with Grotto and examples of most of the British ferns.

From Danesbury Park we proceed to Mardley Heath, another nature reserve. Once common land and then gravel pits, now given back to nature.

Onto Burnham Green and tales of the headless horse. From here we proceed towards Margery Green and then to Dawley Wood. Then finally on to Digswell for tea and cake.

Please bring a packed lunch for picnic stop at Burnham Green. Pub on the Green for refreshments.

Dogs are welcome on a lead.

Suitable for children over 12 years old.
