Overview

An all-day walk along the Welwyn Garden City Centenary Walk, which takes in some beautiful locations including Digswell, Tewin Bury, Mill Green, Stanborough Park/Lakes, Lemsford Mill, Brocket Hall, Sherrardspark Wood and Digswell Viaduct.

The waymarked route was launched in 2020 to celebrate 100 years of Welwyn Garden City and measures 20.20km around the outskirts of the town - though we’ll add about a mile by starting and finishing at Digswell Village Hall.

We start the walk along the Mimram Valley, through Tewin Bury Farm where we may see alpacas. Across the B1000 we go south west through the suburb of Panshanger towards The Commons Local Nature Reserve, comprising ancient woodland, meadows, fens and ponds.

Across a golf course we head towards Mill Green. Along the Lea Valley Walk we enter Stanborough Park and walk alongside the boating and sailing lakes. We’ll pause for packed lunch in the park and there’ll be an opportunity to buy a drink and use the toilets.

If we can't walk under the motorway due to high water levels, we will take a short diversion and arrive in the village of Lemsford. Past Lemsford Mill we enter the landscaped parkland of Brocket Hall where we cross another golf course to arrive in Ayot Green. If time allows, we might have a pub stop here.

From Ayot Green we walk through Sherrardspark Wood, another nature reserve of ancient woodland, then past the 12th-century Digswell church, 19th-century Digswell House and Digswell Water. Finally we pass under the imposing Digswell Viaduct and back to the Village Hall for cream tea.

Please bring a packed lunch, snacks and drinks, and ICE (in case of emergency) card - see https://tinyurl.com/hnm-ice.

This walk is not suitable for dogs.
