Overview

This is a Ramblers walk with a difference and it is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund!

Your car parking charge will be paid and after the lunch break you can choose to take a free bus back to the start or continue the walk around the mountain with your Ramblers leader, Dave.

We have worked with Partneriaeth Tirwedd Ynys Cybi Ynys Cybi / Holy Island Landscape Partnership to organise a short walk to introduce you to the history and archaeology of Holyhead Mountain and the wider area, guided by the archaeologist, antiquarian and author Rhys Mwyn.

Also joining us on the walk will be Ian Taylor of wellhopper.wales who will explain the importance of the wells on Ynys Cybi.

We will be walking from Breakwater Country Park to the RSPB cafe at South Stack, a distance of about 3 miles. The route will include the well, Ffynnon y Wrach and the hut circles of Ty Mawr where will pause to learn about their history and importance.

The information given on the walk will be bilingual, in Welsh and English, and suitable for those who wish to practice their Welsh language skills.

Note that this is a challenging walk with steep inclines and rough terrain. You should have a reasonable level of fitness and be prepared for a walk of 3 hours.

Waterproof clothing, stout footwear and walking poles are recommended.

Please bring a packed lunch and a drink.

We will end the historical/archaeological walk at the RSPB cafe for coffee and tea.

A bus will be provided to take those wishing to return directly to the start.

Provided the weather conditions and timing are favourable, I will be delighted to lead those who wish to do so to continue the walk around Holyhead Mountain and back to the start point. This will take about 2 hours as it is an additional 4 miles with an ascent of approximately 150 metres. Please note that this is a walk with steep drop-offs above cliff edges and rocky, uneven surfaces. It will not be suitable for those who suffer from vertigo.

There are toilets at the start and at the RSPB cafe.

Well behaved dogs on short leads are welcome, but they will not be admitted to the cafe (except assistance dogs).

Please text me, Dave M on 07908 128768 and I will confirm your place.                Please indicate whether you are likley to use the bus back to the start.

It is very useful to know how many walkers to expect, particularly for this walk.
