Overview

This walk is for up to 20 people, including the leader.

A short summer evening walk with an option of food and drink partway round at The Windmill pub in Charlton. The route is mainly on rural footpaths and has some gentle inclines.

From St Mary’s Square (overlooking the church and the River Hiz) we begin by heading out of Hitchin and across Priory Fields. From the top of the field we’ll have a great view of the countryside to the west of town. We’ll walk downhill towards the source of the River Hiz at Wellhead, then via field-edge path and hedge-lined byways we’ll arrive at Windmill Lane and proceed to the hamlet of Charlton.

We’ll see nothing of the mill which gave the lane its name but will be able to stop at The Windmill pub for dinner and drinks at around 8pm. Pre-orders for food would be appreciated by the pub. They offer various curry options - vegan, chicken, beef or goat curry (all gluten free) - please indicate when you RSVP if you would like to order one of these.

From the pub it’s about 30 minutes’ walk back to our start point retracing the beginning of the route via Priory Fields. It will be dark by the time we leave the pub so please bring a torch to light the way back (preferably a head torch).

If you don’t wish to stay at the pub then directions will be given for you to return to the start without the leader.

Please note this walk is not suitable for dogs.

For information about walking with the group, including our dog policy, please visit the Stag Walkers website.

Booking your place: Please book your place using the free Meetup website/app. Join the Stag Walkers Meetup group and click the 'Attend' button on the event page.

Please do not turn up for a walk without booking, as places are limited.

If the walk is fully booked, click 'join waitlist' to get a place if one becomes available and please check back regularly in case you do get a place. The waitlist gives priority to single bookings so if you wish to bring a guest, we recommend booking separately.

Unless you opt in to further communications, we will only use contact information you provide to get in touch about the walk.

  • DO NOT book onto a walk unless you are pretty sure you will be able to make it.

  • DON’T NO-SHOW on the day unless it is absolutely unavoidable (we do understand ‘life happens’) because it prevents others from enjoying a walk if it is fully booked.

  • *TAKE NOTE that if you no-show three times, without extenuating circumstances, we will decline further bookings from you for a period of six weeks.*

  • DO car-share or use public transport if possible. To offer a lift or ask for one from a fellow walker, please use the Meetup event page.
