A part of 2023 South Hams Festival of Walks, this is a short outing but it packs in an abundance of interest and spectacular coastal and river estuary scenery, as well as a famous island with literary connections.
We start from the NT car park at Ringmore and walk inland through the village before traversing a steep valley to Mount Folly Farm. The reward is impressive views out towards Burgh Island and beyond.
We then descend a grassy path into Bigbury-On-Sea and its popular beach, with the beautiful Avon valley and estuary always to our left. From the beach, we will cross over to, and walk around, Burgh Island with its imposing and famous art deco hotel dating from 1929. Agatha Christie was a regular visitor and the island served as an inspiration for two of her novels. There is also a fascinating 14th Century pub here.
Next, it will be lunch on the beach (toilets and café available). After that, it’s onwards to another wonderful stretch of sand at Challaborough and more gorgeous views across the rugged South Hams coast. We finish the walk by taking in the remote Ayrmer Cove, a must see on this part of the coast.
Waypoints: Ringmore, Mount Folly Farm, Bigbury-on-Sea, Burgh Island, Challaborough, Ayrmer Cove.
