We are the West Berkshire Ramblers. We open the way for everyone in our local community to enjoy the pleasures of walking.
This 5.2 mile walk is quite hilly in places, but, weather permitting, we shall be rewarded for our efforts with some beautiful views. From the Fieldgate Centre on the western side of Kingsclere we shall make our way through the village via Popes Hill, George Street and The Dell, before starting the steady climb that eventually takes us up onto the downs at Plantation Farm. From here we shall head in a westerly direction across to the woodland that covers Freemantle Park Down, just below the TV mast on Cottington's Hill. We shall then come down through the trees to follow a path heading north beside the gallops belonging to Park House Stables. As we approach Kingsclere, we shall cross Hollowshot Lane and climb Shepherds Steps onto the Recreation Ground, before heading down into the village and back to the Fieldgate Centre.
There are quite a few ups and downs on this walk, but no stiles. Conditions underfoot should be pretty good on the whole, but a bit of mud can't be completely ruled out! Please wear appropriate clothing according to the weather on the day.
