Overview

This is a walk in the southern part of the Vale of Pewsey. Marden is about 7 miles south east of Devizes. The walk starts in the village and proceeds through Wilsford and up onto Salisbury Plain with superb views (weather permitting!). It then follows the top of the Plain for two miles before dropping back to the Vale and through Chirton and Beechingstoke.  We return to Marden through what remains of one of the largest Neolithic henge monuments in Britain, thought also to have once had a monument similar to Silbury Hill. There are some features still visible but post-Prehistoric farming has removed most of the landmarks. Will appeal to those who enjoyed Frank’s castle (with no castle) and river (with no river) walk or my lake (with no lake) walk. Please note that this is a normal walk – I will keep my historical chuntering to a minimum and at the end.  Bring snack and lunch.  Only a short drive from Honeystreet so those who like a coffee and cake at the end of the walk can repair there.

This is a small village with no car park so we will need to park on the road (it seems customary to park on the west side of the road). Please try and car share (I can take three passengers) so we can minimise impact on the village. One option for those driving singly is to arrange to meet others doing the same at the Devizes Wharf Car Park (modest charge) at around 9.30 and then pool from there (or any other convenient parking place you are familiar wth). Have a word with other potential walkers on the walks preceding. SN10 3RH (postcode of The Millstream pub a little further north of start)
