West Tanfield sits at the eastern end of Wensleydale alongside the River Ure, where a graceful arched stone bridge spans the water. The 15th-century Marmion Tower sits squarely next to the older church of St Nicholas. Now in the care of English Heritage, Marmion Tower is three storeys tall, features a beautiful oriel window and was once the imposing gatehouse to a long-vanished riverside manor house.
The route follows the Ripon Rowell long distance path in part and passes Sleningford Water Mill.
Expect gently undulating riverside, field paths/tracks and quiet lanes.
The Bull Inn just across the road from the meeting point is convenient for post walk refreshments.
