Area long walk. Distances are generally 9-10 miles unless specified.
From Marple Station to Peak Forest Canal towpath, Marple Aqueduct over the River Goyt, under the aqueduct and railway viaduct, River Etherow (I may take a detour on the day depending on guesstimate of mud volume), Etherow Country Park at Compstall, School Lane, Beacom Lane, Werneth Low Golf Course, Uplands Road, Mount Road, Werneth Low Country Park, Hyde War Memorial, Apple Street, Back Wood, Leylands Lane (adjacent Hurstclough Brook handy for a paddle and muddy boot washing!), Hodge Lane and Broadbottom Station.
Compstall to the golf course is a long, steady and partly steep climb, but the views all along the way are rewarding, so plenty of excuses to stop for a breather if required. It looks like a lot of road walking when, in fact, the roads and lanes are all single track and some are just rough rural tracks.
There will be mud, especially in the woodland areas and by the river, so poles and gaiters recommended.
Approx 9 miles and 12 or so straightforward stiles.
If anyone wishes to view the stage route proper (I have varied it in parts), it is on the Go Jauntly app which is free to download.
No booking required, although we do ask that everyone carries an ICE card - we can supply if needed.
The walks will invariably involve ascent and descent, some of which may be steep. They will usually, depending on the weather, be soft and/or muddy, sometimes with ill defined tracks across fields or moorland - ensure you have appropriate footwear. Please consider your personal fitness and ability before attending the walk - if you're not sure, feel free to contact us for advice on the potential conditions, whilst the leader will base the walk on their own ability and may issue instructions where appropriate, you are ultimately responsible for your own safety. Please wear appropriate clothing for the prevailing weather, plan for the worst and hope for the best, bring any essentials and lunch.
