We will be walking high up on the Matley Ridge with good views down across the forest to Southampton Water. This is a dry track on sand and gravel and so great for winter. There is some interesting evidence here of WW1 trenches where there were encampments of soldiers here. Also they did dog training. Then skirting the Matley campsite through woodland, we cross the road to join a quiet lane to take us down to the woodland hamlet of Denny Lodge.
After this we join some gravel tracks through the woods to Denny Inclosure and Holmhill Passage to Pondhead. There will be very little mud on this excursion, no stiles and pretty good underfoot.
Sorry but no toilets, cafes or shops on this one, but you could venture into Lyndhurst afterwards.
Bring refreshments for a coffee stop.
