This circular walk starts in Melbourn, a picturesque village in Cambridgeshire, rich with history and charm. We will start at All Saints’ Church, before heading north towards Meldreth. As we leave Melbourn, we will walk alongside the river Mel, one of only 200 chalk streams in the world, most of which are in the UK. Conservation has improved the water flow and the river now supports a large population of invertebrates and hence trout and the endangered water vole have returned.
In Meldreth, a charming village with its old cottages and tranquil atmosphere, we will pass by the village’s Holy Trinity Church, a lovely medieval building.
From Meldreth, we will continue towards Shepreth L-Moor, a 16 acre site of Special Scientific Interest which consists of unploughed calcareous grassland with diverse flora such as horseshoe vetch and felwort in drier areas, and devil's bit scabious and fen bedstraw in wetter ones.
Leaving the site we will stop for lunch at the restaurant "Hot Numbers coffee Roasters" where you can purchase food & drinks or consume your own.
Leaving Shepreth behind, we will head southwards towards Fowlmere Nature Reserve. The reserve, managed by the RSPB, is a peaceful haven for birdwatchers and nature lovers. As we walk the paths through the wetlands and reed beds, you might spot species like kingfishers, marsh harriers, or herons. The reserve's boardwalks and hides allow you to immerse yourself in the tranquil beauty of this protected environment.
From Fowlmere, the route brings us back towards Melbourn. The whole walk is roughly 8.5 miles, and it's a perfect blend of village charm, countryside tranquility, and natural beauty.
We will meet at the Free car park situated on the south side of the High Street near Vicarage Close.
Public transport is available by bus from Trumpington Park & Ride, leaving at 9:19am arriving Vicarage Close at 9:51am.
