Overview

From the starting point of Gibson Park carpark, we pass the Melrose rugby ground and join the Southern Upland Way (SUW) in the direction of the Chain Bridge. We cross this bridge and continue to follow the SUW, crossing the B6360, and head upwards in a steady but sharp ascent to a road junction, where we leave the SUW. We pass Wester and Easter Housebyres and follow a rough track to the two Byres Lochs. Beyond the third loch (Stoney Knowes Moss), we rejoin the SUW, where we turn south back towards Melrose. At the minor road we crossed earlier, we head eastwards past Gattonside Mains Farm, down through the village of Gattonside, and back to the Chain Bridge and Melrose.
