In the morning a walk from Mortimer Station along the Foundry Brook and through quiet countryside to the site of the Roman Town of Silchester visiting the amphitheatre and the 12th century parish church. We then walk across the site of the Roman town to Silchester Village for lunch. After lunch we walk across commons and through woodlands to the Kennet and Avon Canal at Aldermaston.
Please bring a picnic lunch, but we will stop for drinks and toilets at the Calleva Arms in Silchester at lunch time.
There is a tea room at Aldermaston Wharf at the end of the walk
Suggested train is the Elizabeth Line departing Paddington at 9.17am, Ealing Broadway at 9.26am and arriving at Reading at 10.12am. Change of train to take the GWR service departing Reading at 10.37am arriving at Mortimer at 10.51am. It is suggested we meet on the overbridge at Reading Station at the top of the stairways leading from platforms 8/9.
Return journey is from Aldermaston: hourly trains to Reading at 25 minutes past each hour.
Freedom pass holders need only book a single from Reading to Mortimer and a single from Aldermaston to Reading. Otherwise, a day return to ALdermaston is suggested plus a single from Reading to Mortimer.
The toilets at Mortimer Station are unlikely to be open. Toilets available at Reading Station.
