West Mendip Walkers 10 mile moderate circular walk starting from Oakhill (BA3 5AN). Walk proceeds across farmland to a balcony footpath along the top of Harridge Woods, a nature reserve operated by Somerset Wildlife Trust. The walk follows a nature trail loop through the woods and visits the restored Keeper's Cottage home to at least seven different species of bat. We then walk to the old mining village of Coleford and turn south west along Mells stream and out past a large limestone quarry, one of many in the area. We eventually reach Stoke St Michael, once a busy cloth and paper manufacturing centre, and then along Three Ashes Lane with good views of Harridge Wood before returning to Oakhill and tea in the village hall. Mostly dog friendly but there are several slab stiles in the first stretch of farmland after the car park. There is a steep drop off the balcony footpath so dogs on leads advised for this stretch. Can be muddy and slippery in parts.
The Village Hall is being opened especially for us and refreshments will be available at the end of the walk. Walkers are asked to register for the walk and indicate whether they intend to stay for tea/coffee.
