This walk is for up to 25 people, including the walk leader.
A fairly flat walk around St. Neots along the River Great Ouse, the Great North Road and to the villages west of St. Neots passing some historic landmarks along the way. We will begin our walk from Riverside Park Car Park and start walking along the River Great Ouse. As we trek along the Ouse Valley Walk, we will be able to get some views over the river of the former site of Eaton Socon Castle.
We will then cross over the river into Eaton Socon and walk past the Eaton Socon Cage, a 19th century lock-up just off the Great North Road. We will have the opportunity to stop for a quick break and take photos of the historic landmark.
After strolling along the old Great North Road, we will trek across some scenic countryside where if we’re lucky, we might spot the odd deer or two. We will cross some arable farmlands towards the village of Duloe. Afterwards, we have the option to stop and view Willow Row Barrow, a modern version of an ancient burial mound, used as a resting place for crematorium urns. Then, we will cross the old A45 road and stop for lunch in the village of Hail Weston where there will be an optional pub stop at the Royal Oak, before continuing our walk back towards St. Neots.
After crossing some more fantastic rural scenery, we will rejoin the Great North Road before passing the village of Little Paxton. We will cross over the Great Ouse again via Paxton Bridge where we will continue our final stretch of walking through St. Neots common. Here, we will rejoin the Ouse Valley Walk where you will experience some nice scenery of the St. Neots skyline and the river with hopefully some spectacular wildlife to observe.
Once we reach the town centre, there is an optional pub stop at the Bridge House where our walk will finish. If you want to head straight back to the start point, just head over St. Neots Bridge where you will reach the Riverside Car Park to the left.
Dogs are welcome, on a lead.
