This walk is for up to 25 people, including the leader.
An all-day walk from day into night along the Garden City Greenway encircling Letchworth, visiting local countryside and neighbouring towns.
After the walk, there is the option of attending a fireworks display at Letchworth Eagles Football Club - please see our separate event page for details and how to book for the display.
The Greenway is on relatively flat land with a few gentle slopes and comprises a mixture of settings, including urban areas, farmland and woodland. Dusk will be at 16:55, so walkers may wish to bring head torches.
We will start off at Baldock Road Recreation Ground, and join the Greenway adjacent to the Jackmans Estate; we will follow the Greenway anticlockwise, passing Letchworth Rugby Club before entering open countryside, following the A1(M) until we reach Baldock, passing the fire station and Knights Templar School. The Greenway then passes through Letchworth's industrial area, before heading towards Nortonbury, currently used as a health spa.
We will pass Radwell Meadows and cut through the Grange Rec, after which we should get some good views of Fairfield Park, before passing Standalone Farm. We will arrive at Letchworth via Wilbury Hills Road, and pass through Wilbury Road Cemetery, where the Garden City's founder Ebenezer Howard is buried.
After this, we will join the route of the Hitchin HOOP, passing through an area made up of prefab buildings, constructed in haste after World War Two; as we cross the railway, you should get some views of the famous Spirella Building.
Leaving Letchworth, we will get some good views of Hitchin from Ickleford Barrow, before crossing the A505 and reaching the edge of Hitchin's Purwell Estate, before turning towards Willian, passing near to Wymondley Wood. Upon arriving at Willian, we will pass the arboretum and the statue of Telford Morton, a noteworthy Letchworth resident who died in 2001.
We will detour to Willian for a pub stop, before rejoining the Greenway and entering Letchworth again, through the Jackmans Estate, before returning to the start point in time to watch the fireworks.
Some of the sights on this walk, incuding the fields adjacent to the Grange Estate, and the prefab buildings near Wilbury are likely to be lost due to redevelopment, so this is a good opportunity to see them while we can.
This is a lengthy walk so please ensure you are prepared for the distance and bring adequate food and drink, including a packed lunch, plus warm clothes if staying for the fireworks.
Dogs are welcome on a lead, but please don't bring a dog if staying for the fireworks social afterward.

Booking your place: Please book your place using the free Meetup website/app. Join the Stag Walkers Meetup group and click the 'Attend' button on the event page.
Please do not turn up for a walk without booking, as places are limited.
If the walk is fully booked, click 'join waitlist' to get a place if one becomes available and please check back regularly in case you do get a place. The waitlist gives priority to single bookings so if you wish to bring a guest, we recommend booking separately.
Unless you opt in to further communications, we will only use contact information you provide to get in touch about the walk.
This is a circular walk.
The start time is when we aim to start walking and the finish time is an estimate.
Walks are graded Easy, Leisurely, Moderate or Strenuous in increasing order of difficulty. Please read the walk description to check it is within your abilities and contact the group if you are unsure.
Please:
- DO NOT book onto a walk unless you are pretty sure you will be able to make it.
- UPDATE YOUR RSVP. We understand ‘life happens’ so if you need to change your RSVP please do this at least 24 hours before the walk and before booking closes to enable someone else to take your place.
- DON’T NO-SHOW on the day unless it is absolutely unavoidable (we do understand ‘life happens’) because it prevents others from enjoying a walk if it is fully booked.
- *TAKE NOTE that if you no-show three times, without extenuating circumstances, we will decline further bookings from you for a period of six weeks.*
- DO car-share or use public transport if possible. To offer a lift or ask for one from a fellow walker, please use the Meetup event page.
- BRING a packed lunch/snacks and drinks, appropriate clothing for the conditions and optionally a basic first aid kit.
- FOLLOW NHS guidelines and do not attend the walk if you are unwell.
