Today's walk is an adaptation of an earlier walk that Michael led back in June 2024.
Today's walk will take us from Mortimer to Midgham station via the Roman site at Silchester and the AWE site in Tadley. Starting at Mortimer station, we'll walk through Stratfield Mortimer towards Mortimer St. Mary's before heading southwards towards Park Lane, where we turn right to head towards the Roman Silchester site. Here, we'll walk around it in a clockwise direction before heading towards Silchester village, where we'll stop off at The Calleva Arms for lunch. After this, we'll walk through Silchester Common before walking through Pamber Heath and Tadley Common before reaching Tadley village. After passing through, we'll pass the west gate of AWE before heading towards Paices Wood and Brimpton Airfield before following the footpath towards our finishing point at Midgham station. For those who want a pint at the end of the walk, we'll be stopping off at The Rowbarge, which is only a short distance from the station.
TRAINS:
The recommended train to get is the 10:07 GWR service that arrives in Mortimer at 10:20.
DRIVING:
Mortimer has a small car park, where parking fees apply, and as this is a linear walk, you'll need to make your way back to the starting point. Alternatively, you can park at the end of the walk and take the train to the starting point.
