This is a circular walk from Allerston via Ebberston, Chafer Wood (nature reserve) and Givendale. The walk gives good views over the Vale of Pickering and Yorkshire Wolds from countryside to the south of Dalby Forest. Walking is on good paths and forest tracks. There's a bus service from Scarborough and Helmsley. See details below for meeting point, bus and parking.
Start point Allerston Main Street (B1415) to rear of Methodist Chapel (Water Gap)
Bus 128 from Scarborough station (0940 arr 1022). From Helmsley (0930), Pickering (1015) arr 1029. Please let leader know if you're coming by bus, we'll wait for you.
Return buses 1529 or 1729 to Scarborough, 1522 or 1722 to Helmsley.
Parking On E side of Main Street with consideration for others (restrictions N of church) or 300m N of Cayley Arms on forest track before the gate
You'll need to allow 5-10 mins to walk from the bus stops/parking down to Water Gap. Look for a track next to the Methodist Chapel, you'll find picnic benches behind that.
It's a moderate walk which climbs steadily above Ebberston in the morning and descends gently through the forest from Givendale Head in the afternoon. Paths are good, but can be muddy in places, so boots needed.
Dogs welcome, on short lead for entire walk".
