Overview

This is an interesting, largely flat, walk covering a variety of different walking surfaces including sand, shingle, rocks, and both muddy and concrete farm tracks. The many good views across the Firth of Forth, including the iconic Bass Rock, are complemented with an abundance of history along the Seacliff coastline. The walk is a little over 5 miles and is classed as moderate (C+).

Walking poles and gaiters are strongly recommended as there are muddy areas following recent rains. The beach rocks can present uneven and occasionally slippy surfaces, but with the depth of beach available with the tide out there are many options of route to chose the easiest path.

The Seacliff Car Park is 55 miles from Biggar. Leave Biggar on the A702 to the Edinburgh by pass, the A720, heading south to join the A1. Immediately after passing Haddington turn off left onto the A199, signposted “Attractions” and East Linton. After 6 miles turn left off the A199 onto the A198, signposted North Berwick. Passing Tyningham and Whitekirk after 5 miles the road rises up to a sharp left hand bend at Auldhame farm. At the corner turn right onto a concrete farm track passing the sign for Seacliff car park (£5 parking fee). At the end of the straight bear left at the fork & pass through the barrier, having paid the parking fee at the ticket machine (cards accepted). Head carefully down the rough track to the car park by the porta cabin toilets. The track is quite rutted and best suited to SUVs, although standard cars can negotiate the track with care.
