Overview

This walk is for up to 30 people, including the leader.

Join us for an afternoon walk northwest of Shepreth through farmland, villages, meadows and woodland, finishing with an optional drink at a village pub.

The route is flat and short, making it an ideal option if you’re new to country walking. Existing members are of course welcome too. The route forms the second loop of a figure of eight from Shepreth so those who like longer walks can complete a full 11 miles if joining us for the whole day. Some paths may be muddy and wet, so please wear suitable footwear.

The walk starts in the village of Shepreth, halfway between Royston and Cambridge, at the Village Hall three minutes’ walk from Shepreth railway station. We’ll begin by walking past Shepreth Wildlife Park then head towards the village of Barrington via a level crossing of the railway line.

Barrington boasts one of the longest village greens in the country, lined with many picturesque thatched cottages. We’ll walk along the green and past a converted windmill then come to Riverside Meadows, between the River Rhee and Guilden Brook. After passing through the meadows, the path twists and turns through a belt of woodland and takes us towards Meldreth village.

We’ll then go back to Shepreth via the L-Moor Nature Reserve, an L-shaped area of grassland and a Site of Special Scientific Interest, and through the churchyard of the 12th-century All Saints church.

A few minutes’ walk from the end of our route there is the option to finish with a drink at The Plough, a large independent pub with a classic music theme and a great range of craft beer, cask ale and real cider.

Dogs are welcome on a lead.

For information about walking with the group, including our dog policy, please visit the Stag Walkers website.

Booking your place: Please book your place using the free Meetup website/app. Join the Stag Walkers Meetup group and click the 'Attend' button on the event page.

Please do not turn up for a walk without booking, as places are limited.

If the walk is fully booked, please click 'join waitlist' then please check back regularly as you will likely get a place. The waitlist gives priority to single bookings so if you wish to bring a guest, we recommend booking separately.

Unless you opt in to further communications, we will only use contact information you provide to get in touch about the walk.
