This walk is for up to 25 people, including the leader.
A pleasant summertime route through farmland on the Bedfordshire/Hertfordshire border, with a number of gentle slopes.
Starting at Mount Pleasant Golf Club in Lower Stondon, we’ll walk through Upper Stondon and the edge of Henlow Camp as we make our way towards Meppershall and through Chapel Farm. The farm is named for a chapel dedicated to St Thomas, which was built in the 12th century but for the last 300 years has been used as a barn!
As we walk through the fields we’ll see a more prominent landmark: the massive concrete water tower which stands on the ridge between Stondon and Meppershall. We’ll pass by the tower and have an excellent view downhill from the ridge.
We continue past horse paddocks around Chibley Farm then after a brief stretch of road walking we head around arable fields to the little village of Holwell in North Hertfordshire, where we’ll stop for our packed lunch. We’ll then go back to Lower Stondon through further fields of ripening crops.
After the walk we can visit the Fairway Bistro at the Golf Club for coffee and cake or a selection of real ale, lager, and cider.
Please note parts of the route are on cross-field paths which can become muddy after rain, so boots are recommended if we’ve had wet weather.
Please note that this walk is not suitable for dogs.
For information about walking with the group, including our dog policy, please visit the Stag Walkers website.
