A 10 mile walk starting at Guildford station and ending at Gomshall station. An energetic first section follows town streets including the High Street to Pewley Down where there are great views. From chalky Pewley we go to sandy St. Martha's for a refreshment break and a chance to take in yet more views! The route descends into the valley of the River Tillingbourne for a stroll through the ruins of Chilworth Gunpowder Works. From Chilworth we follow the Law Brook into the hills behind Albury, heading for a lunch break at Albury Heath. Next is Shere Park and the Tillingbourne again, then Shere village, and "across the fields" (as us locals used to say) to Gomshall.
The leader will be starting from Basingstoke station on the 08.23 GWR service and travelling by train via Reading. Meet at Basingstoke station at 08.15. Start from Guildford station at 10.10. The first part of the walk is challenging as it goes from the lowest part of Guildford to the highest part in a fairly short distance. The descent from St Martha's is on an uneven path so poles might be handy. Very few stiles (possibly only one). Some mud. The hills are more forgiving after St. Martha's. No real chances to buy food/drink between Guildford and Shere, but there are pubs/cafes at each end of the walk. There are direct trains from Gomshall back to Guildford , but they're not frequent and, if delayed, we might need to do that journey by bus. For those travelling from Basingstoke by train the recommended tickets to buy are two Day returns, Basingstoke to Reading and Reading to Gomshall.
