The walk starts on a road/verge walk to follow a grassy towpath to Canal Head, mainly using the left hand bank, but crossing near Bielby and using the other side for a while. There is much to see of interest on the route with several locks and swing bridges (none in use today) and houseboats at Melbourne. Much of the route passes through Melbourne and Thornton SSSI and is rich in wildlife. We maybe able to get refreshments at the Old Forge Tearoom at Canal Head. We then have a short walk up Canal Lane to Hodsow Road on the outskirts of Pocklington from where we catch the bus back to York.
